Use the full potential of your EV's driving range
Do you already drive an electric vehicle (EV) or are you switching soon? Perhaps the biggest adjustment is to keep a close eye on your vehicle's autonomy, or the distance you can travel on a single charge. In this blog, you will discover what factors affect your driving range and how to enjoy a comfortable driving experience with peace of mind.
How many kilometres can you travel on a fully charged battery? This varies from ride to ride. Don't focus too much on the theoretical driving range the manufacturer displays in your EV's manual. After all, this is a general estimate of the driving range in the most ideal conditions. In reality, several factors affect the real range you will achieve. But did you know that, to a large extent, you can also control those factors yourself?
If you take the following things into account, you can significantly increase your driving range:
1. Adjust your driving style
A few small adjustments to your driving style can make a big difference. After all, your battery drains faster if you drive assertively, for instance by accelerating hard or maintaining high speeds.
One technique you should definitely use is regenerative braking. This is a handy feature that feeds the energy released during braking back to the battery - a bit like a dynamo. So combined with a smarter driving style, not only will you save energy this way, you're also going to effectively extend the life of your battery.
2. Heat or cool your vehicle in advance
Your driving range is very dependent on weather conditions. For instance, your range will certainly decrease in winter, when your heating is on full blast. To a slightly lesser extent, the same happens if you turn on the air conditioning during a hot summer day. Therefore, heat or cool your EV half an hour before you leave and while the vehicle is still plugged in. In most models, you can even control this perfectly with your smartphone. That way, you always leave in a pleasant temperature and save your battery.
3. Take care of your battery
Of course, battery life also plays a role in your effective driving range. You can also control this to some extent if you apply the right charging practices. Try to avoid the battery level dropping below 20% and for a normal, daily drive, never charge the battery above 80%. For a long drive, for example a holiday, you can, of course.
4. Pay attention to your tire pressure
The correct tire pressure also has a positive effect on your range. Optimal tire pressure minimizes friction and maximizes your efficiency. And of course it is also safer if you regularly check your tire pressure.
5. Choose the best route
If you drive an EV, you know that planning is important. Use apps or navigation systems specifically designed for EVs. They help you find charging stations along the way and take into account factors such as the terrain and traffic levels. Read more about this in our blog about useful EV apps.
6. Don't carry unnecessary weight
The heavier the contents of your vehicle, the more energy you use. So avoid unnecessary weight in the trunk. Aerodynamics also play a role. For example, bicycles, luggage racks and roof boxes can increase air resistance, which requires more energy from your battery.
Enjoy ultimate driving pleasure
With the right driving style and good habits, you get the most out of your battery and can optimally enjoy the unique comfort of an EV. Have fun driving!
