Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer

The Variant legend continued

The introduction of the estate version of the electric Volkswagen ID.7 coincides with the demise of the Variant moniker used since 1962 for VW’s ‘station wagons’. But what’s in a name?

The ID.7 Tourer is exactly the same length as the ID.7 Saloon: it is just shy of five metres long and its wheel axles are 2,971 mm apart. This means that interior space in the estate version is as generous as in the saloon, with plenty of room for the rear occupants, who benefit from the additional space created by the higher roofline.

Identical up to the C-pillar

Visually, the Saloon and Tourer are identical up to the C-pillar, but their rear compartment is fundamentally different. The ID.7 Tourer features an eye-catching LED strip across the boot with an illuminated VW logo in its centre (on some versions), while the 3D LED tail lights have dynamic brake lights and indicators.

Behind the electric boot lid the Tourer conceals 545 litres of luggage space. With the rear seats in the straighter Cargo position, that number grows to 605 litres, and if you fold them flat, the Tourer can stow as much as 1,714 litres. It does not match the new Passat Variant, but the ID.7 Tourer still makes a pretty good moving vehicle.

77 or 86 kWh

77 or 86 kWh

The batteries and electric motor of the ID.7 Tourer are the same as in the Saloon. That means you can choose between the Pro, with a 77-kWh net battery can fast-charge at 175 kW, and the Pro S (available by the end of 2024), which has 86 kWh of usable battery capacity and charges at speeds of up to 200 kW on a DC fast charger. In both cases, a 210 kW (286 hp) and 545 Nm electric motor drives the rear wheels.

With the Pro, you should be able to reach 600 kilometres in optimal conditions according to the WLTP. For the Pro S, VW is counting on 85 kilometres more, but official figures for that version are still pending.

Identical equipment

Identical equipment

As the ID.7 Saloon and Tourer are identical in terms of equipment, the estate can also be fitted with the large panoramic roof with Smart Glass, which can be made opaque at the touch of a button. Massaging and ventilated ErgoActive comfort seats are equally available as an option. The 15-inch infotainment screen now has illuminated virtual sliders for volume and temperature, addressing a common point of criticism concerning the other ID models.

The IDA voice assistant will also be equipped with ChatGPT. This makes it possible to ask the car much more than just car-related questions.
