The engine is purring, you’re basking in the warmth of sunshine through the windscreen, a picnic basket is packed in the boot, and you feel the jittering joy of anticipation. You are heading out into Denmark’s beautiful landscape on a road trip with family, sweetheart or friends. If spending a weekend or a few days in this pursuit sounds perfect, then read on. We love driving at random and have amassed eight recommended Danish destinations that are perfect for road trips in your company car.

For the past decade, Jan has been the happy owner of a cottage on Bøtø in Marielyst, which enables him to enjoy the sea, forest and activities for all age groups – not to mention the area’s calm, relaxing atmosphere. The beach in Marielyst has been voted the ‘Best Beach in Denmark’ by Rejseliv’s readers for the past three years and you’ll understand why once you’ve been there. These 20 kilometres of soft, silvery sand constitute a major attraction in their own right. Marielyst is a pleasant seaside town with cafés and restaurants where you will truly feel the summer atmosphere. Nearby you find the old market town of Nykøbing Falster, as well as the Medieval Centre, an exciting open-air museum.

Jesper was born and raised on this small island in Smålandsfarvandet, the Danish waters connecting the Great Belt to the Baltic Sea. He loves Møn’s rolling scenic countryside, which naturally includes the chalk cliffs known as Møns Klint. At the interesting GeoCenter museum, you can see how the cliffs were formed and then enjoy the impressive sight of this natural phenomenon. If you feel hungry, there are several eateries at Klintholm Harbour, or just drive to Stege to eat at Støberiet, where you select your own cut of meat from the butcher’s display case before it is prepared.

Lene was born and raised on Als, in the village of Dyndved to be precise. She is still fond of visiting her native area and gladly shares her best suggestions. The town of Sønderborg is a charming place to visit in its own right. The old town has many historic buildings, including Sønderborg Castle. Also visit Egen Church, which is particularly renowned for its lovely old horse stables. Danfoss Universe is definitely worth visiting for the whole family, and Lene also recommends the grounds surrounding Augustenborg Palace, where Hans Christian Andersen once sat under a linden tree writing fairy tales.

Anne spent many childhood holidays in North Jutland with her grandparents, and she and her family moved to the area when she was 13. Anne recommends visiting the drifting dune Rubjerg Knude near Lønstrup, a beautiful breathtaking experience; standing atop the dune, you are almost 100 metres over the North Sea. Nearby are the charming holiday towns of Blokhus and Løkken, and North Jutland in general offers wide, beautiful beaches. If you have children, Fårup Sommerland amusement park is a wonderful place to spend a full day.

Mariager, also known as the town of roses, exudes extraordinary charm! The asymmetrical charm of its crooked houses, cobbled streets and half-timbered houses adorned with roses is unadulterated nostalgia. In this town you will feel the presence of history and it has once housed a large monastery. Although the monastery itself no longer exists, the monastic church still towers over the town in all its splendour, and Line warmly recommends a visit to this big church, one of the most beautiful in Denmark. Dine at Hotel Postgården, centrally located in the old town. Here, you will feel transported back in time among all the old houses, and you can easily spend a day in the town centre, supplemented by a trip on the vintage railway through the forest and along the fjord.

Eduardo and Gitte live in Roskilde and Jyllinge (near Roskilde) respectively, and they highly recommend a visit to the town. Roskilde is an old market town steeped in history dating as far back as the Viking Age. It is filled with beautiful old houses such as Lützhøfts Købmandsgaard, furnished as it was in the 1920s. But not least Roskilde Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is definitely worth visiting. If you’re fond of cars, go to a Thursday get-together on the waterfront where classic and vintage cars meet in a beautiful setting. Visit the Viking Ship Museum with demonstration workshops, go sailing on the fjord, or simply go for a nice stroll around the town taking in the atmosphere.

Katrine is one-half bornholmer, as her father’s family comes from the Gudhjem area, where Katrine and her family now have a holiday flat. This explains her seeming endless summer holiday memories from Bornholm, and Katrine guarantees that you will have a fabulous experience on the island. Gudhjem calls itself Denmark’s only mountain town, and besides the village’s steeply inclined streets, Katrine recommends a walk in nearby forests (such as Døndalen), featuring both rocky scenery and waterfalls. Savour the herring speciality ‘Sol over Gudhjem’ (Under the Gudhjem Sun) in the village smokehouse, and don’t miss the ferry crossing to the Christiansø archipelago to experience the stunning historic naval fortress.
