With over 90% of all accidents caused by driver error, such as poor anticipation, inappropriate reaction to a hazard or violation of road traffic laws,i picking up good driving habits will keep you and other road users safe. These five habits are easy to do but the impact they have is great.

The habits of a good driver to pick up this year

  1. Put your phone on "do not disturb" before driving

Driver distraction and mobile phone use while driving is one of the top causes of accidents so this simple action does a lot.

  2. Respect speed limits

Speed limits are there to ensure the safety of all road users. Driving at excessive speeds includes greater potential for loss of vehicle control and increased severity of injuries in a crash, especially in winter where roads are dangerous.

  3. Be tolerant of other road users

Including motorcyclists, cyclists and pedestrians. A road isn’t always just for cars so keeping an eye out for other users and being respectful to them is always important. Road rage can become serious quickly, so don’t engage with angry drivers and keep calm yourself to discourage dangerous behaviour.

  4. Signal turns or lane changes

Signal well in advance so other road users can act accordingly. Other road users can’t read your mind so always indicate any turns and lane changes in time to let them know what you intend to do next.

  5. Park your car in reverse

Doing this takes a bit more time when you park but when you leave your parking space it will be easier and more relaxed to drive off. Reverse parking also means you reduce your blind spots when leaving your space so reduces your damage and injury risk.

There you have it – five simple habits that can save lives and create safer roads for all users. Pledge to make 2021 the year you change your driving habits for the better!
