Frequently asked questions
We would like to keep you on the move. Anytime. Anywhere.
Collection and delivery is subject to availability by the repair garage and the distance radius set by each garage.
Many MOT test centres do not offer collection and delivery, to discuss any particular requirements, please get in touch by clicking the orange circle to the bottom right of the screen and using one of the contact options.
For safety reasons, anything deemed to impact the performance or safety of the vehicle such as issues with brakes, loss of power and any red engine management lights will also not qualify for collection and delivery.

Most common causes of MOT failures to watch out for:
- 1.Keep your car clean, inside and out, including your boot or you may get turned away.
- 2.Give number plates a clean.
- 3.Check windscreen wipers are in good condition - without damage.
- 4.Check all lights work by asking someone to stand outside the car to help you.
- 5.Check tyre tread using the 20p test (see below), and tyre pressure.
- 6.Top up all fluid levels - screenwash, brake fluid and oil.
- 7.Check the horn works.
- 8.All mirrors should be intact and secure.
If you’ve booked a collection and delivery appointment for your MOT and any of the issues below are identified by the driver when they come to collect, they will refuse to drive your vehicle and a new MOT appointment must be arranged.
Windscreens
Check for cracks and chips daily - especially in zone A (image below), which would be an MOT failure. It’s not just damage in the driver’s eyeline, it also includes things blocking the windscreen (such as aftermarket sat-navs or air fresheners).
Tyres
Checking your tyres regularly is vital. The legal requirement is that tyres need 1.6mm of tread across the central three quarters and low tread leads to MOT failures. Use the 20p test to check your tread: insert a 20p in the tread and if you can see the outer band, the tread is too low.
Don’t just rely on the tread you can see, always check:
- across the tyre for uneven wear as this could be mean poor alignment or poor inflation
- for any lumps or cuts which could cause a dangerous blowout
Ignoring your tyre tread and wear could not only result in an MOT failure and delays in getting your vehicle back, but you could be fined up to £2,500 and hit with three penalty points per tyre.
Lighting and signalling
Although vehicles will often warn you of issues with lights or indicators, you can’t rely on this. Switch all your lights on and walk around your car to check they’re working. Do the indicators flash as they should? Don’t forget the number plate light. Ask someone to stand behind the vehicle to check the brake lights light up as you press the brake pedal. It’s also worth checking the condition of the lights. Plastic lenses can get misty over time, so it might be worth buying a kit to clean your lights ahead of the MOT. Look out for any cracks in your lights too.
Brakes
Listen out for squealing or grinding noises from your brakes, both are signs that the pads are running low. When braking, does it stop in a straight line, or does it pull to one side?
Don’t forget your handbrake, too. To check this, you can stop your car on a hill and apply the handbrake. Does it hold the car? If not, it might need adjustment.
EML (Engine Management Lights)
An engine management light - or EML - is a dashboard warning light which lights up when there’s a problem with your car’s engine, emissions system, or exhaust. This makes the EML different to other dashboard warning lights as the EML won’t alert you to a specific problem.
Sometimes known as the ‘check engine’ light, your car’s engine management light will not let you know if there are issues with low coolant or oil levels.
The engine management light usually looks like an engine block, but can say ‘check engine’. It can come on if it is triggered by the sensors in your car which can detect issues with your engine or the level of exhaust emissions. You are most likely to notice an EML when you turn your car on. When your engine management light stays on, the issue can range in severity depending on the colour and status of the light. We recommend checking the driver handbook supplied with your vehicle.
Amber light
If an amber or orange light comes on and stays on, then you should plan to take your car to a garage as soon as you have the chance. You should be safe to keep driving in the meantime, but you should have the vehicle looked at by a professional mechanic swiftly to ensure that a more serious or costly issue doesn’t to develop.
Flashing light
A flashing orange light can indicate that there is a problem impacting the way your vehicle drives. You may be aware of your car shaking, or a new sound being produced by the engine. The vehicle will need to be checked out by a garage as soon as possible.
Red light
A red light is the most serious of all these lights. If you notice a red light whilst driving, you should pull over when it is safe to do so, and call your breakdown provider right away.
You can use the official government site to check the MOT status of your vehicle as well as when it expires. Just enter your registration plate here.

Ahead of your MOT date, check your tyres and windscreen, as well as ensuring that all your lights are working. If you find a fault with your tyres or windscreen or have a warning light on the dashboard, we recommend you arrange for these to be repaired before the MOT takes place.
Not all MOT test centres carry tyres or have the ability to investigate and repair work related to warning lights, and your vehicle may need to be booked into a specialist. There may also be a delay in obtaining replacement parts and tyres to fit your vehicle. In this case you will not be able to drive your vehicle legally. Checking your vehicle ahead of the MOT will prevent unexpected delays.
On the day, if you have been given a timed slot, please arrive at least 10 minutes early for your MOT appointment, so your vehicle is ready to go on the ramp. MOT's are timed appointment slots and arriving late may mean your MOT needs to be rescheduled.
For tips on passing first time, click here.
The majority of vehicles that go in for standard servicing and/or MOT, are returned the same day if there are no complex issues. The vehicle should be ready for collection between 4pm - 5pm or delivered back to you between 4pm - 5.30pm - unless otherwise agreed. Unfortunately, we can't guarantee a specific time but the garage we'll call you to let you know.

If you don't have maintenance with us, you can book your MOT at any VAT-registered garage of your choice. Do remember to keep all receipts as we may ask for this when you return your vehicle to us.

MOT's are due three years after the vehicle is registered, and four years for vehicles in Northern Ireland. MOTs can be carried out up to one month in advance of the expiry date. You can check whether your MOT is valid here https://www.gov.uk/check-mot-history. Remember, it's the driver's responsibility to MOT the vehicle and ensure the vehicle is kept legal and safe at all times.
We will send you reminders and if you have a maintenance in your contract, you can book your MOT by clicking the orange circle to the bottom right of the screen and using one of the contact options. If you don't maintenance with us, please book into a local approved MOT centre.
We recommend booking your MOT in advance of the due date so there's time to repair and book a retest. Please be aware that garages can get busy, especially at certain times of the year. You can book up to three months ahead and tests can be carried out up to 30 days ahead of the due date.
Ahead of the day, remember to check your tyres and windscreen, as well as ensuring that all your lights are working.
See our FAQ on 'How can I ensure my vehicle passes it's MOT?'
If the MOT is due before the vehicle is returned, then the vehicle must have an MOT and confirmation of this provided when returning the vehicle. We cannot collect your vehicle without a valid MOT. If we come to collect your vehicle and the MOT is overdue, we will have to abort the collection until the MOT is complete, resulting in additional charges to you.
If your contract includes maintenance, the garage will forward the MOT certificate to LeasePlan.
If the garage gave you the certificate, you don't need to send it in as we get a live link from the DVLA.
You can view the details of the vehicle's MOT history on www.check-mot.service.gov.uk.
If you need a copy of your MOT certificate, please get in touch by clicking the orange circle to the bottom right of the screen and using one of the contact options
It's important you organise the MOT once you receive your first reminder from LeasePlan. MOTs can be booked in up to three months ahead of the due date and can be carried out up to 30 days before the due date.
Leaving it to the last minute may result in the MOT expiring before it can be booked in. You will not be legally allowed to drive the vehicle if the MOT expires. Your insurance will also become invalid and you could receive a penalty fine and three points on your licence if stopped by the police.
Tyres are one of the main reasons vehicles fail an MOT, so it's worth checking the condition of them **before **your MOT takes place.
If you have maintenance cover in your contract, you can log in to My LeasePlan to book your MOT online or contact by clicking the orange circle to the bottom right of the screen and using one of the contact options. We aim to book MOT appointments at LeasePlan tyre centres so any repairs can be completed in the same visit.
If you don't have maintenance cover included, we suggest checking your tyres before booking in at an approved MOT centre.
If you have a maintenance contract with us and your vehicle has failed an MOT due to tyres, we will arrange and authorise replacement tyres with the test centre. Not all MOT test centres are able to replace tyres, so we can arrange a mobile fitter. We can also arrange an emergency appointment for you, but please bear in mind that there are additional costs applied that will be recharged to you. You may not get your vehicle back on the road on the same day.
It's important that you don't drive the vehicle away to get the tyres replaced as the vehicle will be illegal and the insurance will be invalid. You could receive a penalty fine and three points on your licence if stopped by the police.
If you don't have a maintenance contract with us, you can take your vehicle to any VAT-registered garage of your choice. Please remember to keep all receipts of any work done as this may be asked for when you return your vehicle at the end of your contract.
If you have a maintenance contract, and your vehicle fails its MOT, then the garage will contact us for authorisation to carry out the required work. If this isn't possible, we'll make the necessary arrangements to get the vehicle moved to another garage for the work to be completed and the vehicle retested.
If you have the relief vehicle option included in your contract, please get in touch by clicking the orange circle to the bottom right of the screen and using one of the contact options to arrange a vehicle through our rental partner while your vehicle is being repaired.
It's important that you don't take the vehicle away to get the work sorted yourself. The vehicle is illegal without an MOT and it may be unsafe to drive. Your insurance will be invalid and you could receive a penalty fine of up to £2,500 and three points on your licence if stopped by the police.
If you don't have a maintenance agreement, you will need to ensure that the car is repaired and this can be done at a VAT-registered garage of your choice.
You will receive MOT reminders from us but you can also check on the government MOT checker website. MOTs can be booked in up to 3 months ahead of the due date and can be carried out up to 30 days of due date.
