The Swedish Post and Telecommunications Board, PTS, has initiated a technology shift which means that the 2G and 3G networks must be phased out by the end of 2025 at the latest. Warnings have appeared in various media that the shutdown may affect functions in some cars. Among other things, the European emergency service for cars, eCall, may stop working. That function is activated and automatically sends the geographical position to an emergency center in the event of an accident.

If your car was manufactured in 2020 or later, there is no reason to worry, nor if you drive a Kia or a Mitsubishi. The majority of our drivers will therefore probably not notice anything at all on their car from LeasePlan, but maybe you have a second car that could be affected?

The cars that are affected are mainly older car models that have special functions that use 2G and 3G modems. This could, for example, be about remote control of locks and engine heaters or the function for making emergency calls. The effects will vary depending on the car model and the manufacturer's preparation. Most car manufacturers seem to have the ambition to offer upgrades to those who drive older models.
